The Importance of Probiotics in Your Weight Loss Diet

By: Lawrence Cole

Probiotics are gaining increasing popularity in the world of holistic health and wellness.

These bacteria cultures have been found to promote the health and metabolism of "friendly flora" or "good bacteria" within the intestines when added as a supplement to the diet.

These flora are known to aid the immune system in fighting disease and helping to eliminate "bad" bacteria that are known to make the body ill.

Antibiotics, which are commonly known to fight certain diseases as well---or at least the symptoms of disease---actually kill and flush out various of amounts of the friendly flora existing in the intestines.

Most modern physicians will prescribe a round of probiotics after having their patients take the antiboitics so that the intestinal "good" bacteria can be restored. Unfortunately, this is a fairly recent development and has not always been done.

As a result, many people have taken moderate to large amounts of friendly bacteria killing antibiotics without replacing what they got rid of in their body that was actually good for them.

Even for those who have not flushed out their intestinal baceteria with antiobiotics and the like, it is still recommended that a probiotic be taken regularly to help ensure the health of the bacteria population within the intestines that fight disease.

From a food standpoint, yogurt has also been proven to be a reliable source of friendly intestinal flora.
